Pitch velocity and break does tend to vary a lot, but that happens on pitchers with really good control too.  &lt;A HREF="http://baseball.bornbybits.com/plots/Aaron_Harang.html" REL="nofollow"&gt;Aaron Harang&lt;/A&gt; doesn't look noticeably more variable than Affeldt to my eye.
