Reds sign Terrance Long

The Reds signed Terrance Long to a minor league deal today. Long, 30, probably should be considered a candidate in the fight for the reserve OF position that previously seemed a competition between Quintin McCracken and Dewayne Wise. With Wise's injury, McCracken being injured for much of camp, Tuffy Rhodes' release, and Denorfia's promotion, it should be fairly easy for Long, a starter last year for the Royals, to get into the mix.

Offensively, there's not much here; a contact guy with modest (at best) power, no speed, and what little OBP he has is BA-heavy. He still hit better than McCracken last year, however. Defensively, he showed little value, and according to Baseball Prospectus was actually nicknamed "Magellan" in Oakland due to his poor routes to balls:

All in all, he's a replacement player. The Reds have him signed to a minor league contract, which means he may or not play this year for the Reds. -j

    They way they were talking about him during the game, just seemed like he was in the lead, especially with his spring line of 588/588/941.

  2. You're right, although I have had the distinct impression that the best he could hope to achieve this spring would be a spot in Louisville. Krivsky has stated several times that he's not one to be moved by spring training numbers (which is a good thing).

    Have to say, though...Buchanan's historical stats are pretty encouraging. A career 0.439 SLG w/ peaks in the 0.450's and 0.460's could result in a decent power bat off the bench. Helps offset the career 0.328 OBP fairly well, especially for a 4th or 5th outfielder. -j

  3. Jayson Stark just blogged about Buchanan, saying it's unprecedented for a "non-invitee" to win a roster spot. Apparently Wayne K knew Buchanan from his days with the Twins.

  4. I was interested to hear that both McCracken and Wise may start the season on the DL.

    That might be an opening for a guy like Buchanan or Long to make this team. It's going to be interesting to see how it all shakes out this week. -jinaz
